Jennie Hammond Sings Blossom Dearie in Leeds

Jennie Hammond Sings Blossom Dearie
HEART, Leeds
Tuesday 26th February 2019

Jennie Hammond interprets the songs of Blossom Dearie, a remarkable vocalist jazz pianist, and composer from the bebop era who was able to bridge the gap between west side rhythm and east side lyrical content throughout her career.

Jennie Hammond has been singing ever since she can remember. She has studied the vocal greats of all time, Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Horne, Carmen McRae, Norma Winstone, Carol Kidd and Blossom Dearie to name but a few and was gigging by the age of 14. Jenny went on to study at the Leeds College of Music taking lessons from Tina May and singing with the Ellington Repertory Orchestra.

Her voice has a beautiful naïve quality but with the assurance and maturity of phrasing that has been likened to that of Astrud Gilberto.

Her quartet has Jason Scott on piano, Will Powell guitar, Steve Crocker bass and Dom Moore drums.

The CDK trio comprise of John Cowey, composer and guitarist, Kully Singh, guitarist and bassist and Jon Duffield, trumpet and Flugelhorn.

They met on a jazz course and have been meeting up to play ever since, however this is their first gig together as a trio.

All three have wide and diverse musical tastes and influences including jazz , flamenco, classical and rock music .

The trio will play a set of tunes composed by John Cowey, as well as some well known and lesser known jazz tunes with the occasional surprise thrown in.

Suggested donations of £3-£5, but no one turned away for lack of funds.
